I was just 20 years old when I visited Ritsurin! It had such an impact on me…. Isn’t Osamu Noguchi’s studio there too?

Thank you for your comment, and that sounds like such a memorable experience! I’ll admit that I only knew Osamu Noguchi’s name, but I just looked into it, and his work seems really fascinating. Thank you for sharing! Have you been to his studio before?

No, I have been to his museum in NYC. I read that his art studio was in Shikoku but I don't know where. I wrote a book about stone in gardens and I quoted him.

Yes, you were right—it’s in Shikoku, Kagawa prefecture! Than you for letting me know about it too!

Oh this all looks amazing, I can’t wait to see it. My head was full of Buddhist temples so I missed all these amazing things. Thank you for compiling this, and the format with the pictures and the short text is perfect 🙏

I love this one so much Miki! Many years ago we had the chance to stay in Megijima (Takamatsu) as artists for a few months. I fell in love with Kagawa, Ritsurin, Kotohira, Sanuki Udon... Still one of my favorite foods! Your writing reminded me of how much I love this special place.

We often took the Jumbo Ferry from Kobe to Takamatsu. Not the quickest way to get there, but it's a nice, low cost journey (or at least it was then!) ☺️

Thank you for your writing!

Thank you so much for your thoughtful comment! That sounds like an incredible experience—I've never been to Megijima before, but I really enjoyed Kotohira and, of course, Sanuki udon! I'm so glad more people are discovering places beyond the usual Tokyo, Osaka, and Kyoto.

Also, I had no idea about the Jumbo Ferry—thank you for sharing! I think my readers will definitely appreciate this tip, so I just updated the post with the information. Really appreciate you letting me know!

I'm glad for your explorations too, it is so meaningful and helpful for Japan and people who want to get to know the country on their travel! I am happy the ferry info was useful!

If I could suggest a future adventure, Shimonoseki and Mojiko are a nice duo across the Kanmon Strait from each other! We visit sometimes from Korea as there is an overnight cruise from Busan to Shimonoseki (haha, so you can tell I like ship travel).

Thank you again for sharing such a great suggestion! I’ll definitely look into the ferry when writing about Yamaguchi and Fukuoka. I’ve never experienced ferry travel myself, but now I’m definitely interested in trying it. Thanks so much for the inspiration!

Thank you for your comment, and I’m so happy to hear that Naoshima was the highlight of your trip! I’d love to see the photos! It’s a shame they can’t be shared here in the comments, but if you’d like, you could DM me or post them in a Note. That way, I could share them with my readers—I think they’d love to see Naoshima from the perspective of someone who’s actually been there!

Miki/Xhoni, this is a warm welcome in short tasteful description. Invitation to Kagawa (Shikoku Island), with merits and its exclusiveness.

I fact I have a trip to Japan on my list after years.

A friend from the US who was just visiting Japan for the first time was just in Kagawa. It looks spectacular and I want to go.

That’s amazing! I’m a little surprised that Kagawa was their first destination in Japan, but honestly, what a fantastic choice! If you ever visit, I’d love to hear how your experience was! I also want to go back because there are still places I haven’t visited yet, like the Zenigata Sunae and Ritsurin Garden. Hope you get to explore Kagawa soon!

Thank you for your comment, and I read your latest newsletter about Yayoi Kusama! I didn’t know Yayoi Kusama was this widely loved outside of Japan too! It makes me happy to see her spirit vegetable and polka-dot cosmos connecting with people all around the world. I especially liked your line about the octopus legs being like chapters of our life! I really enjoyed reading your content, so I have added the link to your latest post in my article, thank you for sharing!
